The battle of Technology against Covid-19

The ongoing widespread of Covid – 19 has spiked numerous challenges to the entire world in terms of health crisis, plunging worldwide economy and so forth. After the initial mishaps, the scientific and technology networks are putting their full efforts to propose and use technologies to alleviate the pandemic and restore some sanity. These advancements are helping battle the present health pandemic as well as will, later on, change how we manage repeat of such health crisis. Some of the innovative ideas that are playing a crucial role to fight against this battle are:

  • Location Tracking: The most normally utilized innovation by governments in most of the countries to track people’s whereabouts using information from their phones. At first it was used to identify the places that have been visited before being quarantined to track the transmission of virus. Later it is used to recognize open spaces where group of people are gathering during lock-downs. It is also used to provide an alert to people when they come in within 100m of the infected person. Many mobile applications has been developed based on this technology (Corona Kavach in India, Arogya Setu in  India, Corona 100m in South Korea, Covid Symptom Tracker in UK,  TraceTogether app in Singapore). An application was developed in China to provide colour code to people based on health condition and travel history.  Big Data driven algorithm along with this code is used for giving access to person for entry to public places and travel between cities. For an instance when a major outbreak in number of corona cases occurred in India due to Tablighi Jamaat’s congregation in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area. The officials are tracing each and every individual who have participated in the event with the help of telephonic details, including tracking phones, SIM locations etc. Even the people who have not attended the congregation but were present in that region is also tracked and kept quarantined. The people who have met the participants are also traced with the help of location tracking.

Tele Medicines: This technology is used in enormous medical clinics over the US to securely screen and treat patients from remote spots. It is used to prevent hospitals from getting overcrowded with people. The Xuhui public hospital located in China, have consulted patients from Tibet and even France. Tele Medicines are also implemented in some parts of India such as Kolkata, Mubai, Koch etc., to have 24/7 medical consultation.

Virtual bio-metrics: Infrared thermometers along with face and iris recognition is being widely utilized for screening. In few companies this have been implemented for contact less  entry and attendance system. For example, Ramco Systems, a company in India has launched  an attendance system with face recognition, temperature screening and IoT sensors at doors, to have a contact less entry to organization.

Drones: In some countries, drones are fitted with cameras and loud speakers to disperse people from gathering together. It is also used to sanitize public places. It is also used to deliver meals to quarantined people held in hotels. These are also used to identify people who are not wearing masks when they step outside. It is also used to recognize people with elevated temperatures with the help of thermal cameras. Initially, China had started using drones to spray disinfectants in public places. Later it have been used in Tegucigalpa, Mexico, India ,UAE etc for sanitizing places.  In India, the greater Chennai corporation have introduced drones that can run on petrol that can spray the disinfectant upto a distance of 150 meters , and each drone can cover an area of 50,000 square feet.

Robots: They are deployed in isolation wards of medical clinics to deliver foods and medicines to patients and also to collect wastes. These were also used to disinfect rooms in certain hospitals. They have been widely used in China , US , Europe to prevent the spread of corona disease. In a hospital in China, robots are used to check temperatures, and disinfect people and spaces.

U-V technology: A trunk has been developed by IIT Ropar in India, to sanitize the objects such as groceries, currency notes, items delivered through online shopping etc. A Bangalore based startup company in India has developed a device named as “CoronaOven “ .

Artificial Intelligence:  AI based softwares are developed to scan through CT images of patients lungs. A Chat bot was introduces By World Health Organization (WHO) named as “the WHO chat-bot” to provide information about the corona virus. This chat-bot doesn’t work on natural language instead it has assigned certain emojis for specific tasks. It is also used to recognize people who is wearing mask using face recognition . Arogya setu an application used in India ,have chatcbots that can guide the users to have a self asessment test.

Well these are some of the technologies that have been used widely and there are many more to fight against the widespread of this deadly disease corona. Researches , developers and every mankind have held  hand in hand together to battle against this. Lets hope for the best and maintain social distancing and self isolation which is the most important thing each and every individual can do for us, our nation and to the whole world.
